WSOP Caesars Cup

The events that took place at the Rio yesterday must have sent chills down the back of every geek as team captains began the process of selecting their teams for September’s WSOPE Caesar’s Cup.

Unlike the days’ of yesteryear when fat, bespectacled nerds (look away Greg Raymer) fidgeted uneasily at the back while athletic and popular peoples’ names were called out and every omission brought further embarrassment – here the poker brain is king. So, much like the scenario in the movie ‘Revenge of the Nerds’, the geeks do have their day in the sun with names such as Raymer, Bloch, Lederer and Yang at the forefront of captains’ first choices.

The two WSOPE Caesars Cup captains (Obrestad and Negreanu) picked a team member each to play at this year’s World Series of Poker Europe invitational event – the Caesars Cup. The captains pulled no punches in their selection, with Negreanu (Captain for the Americas) choosing multiple bracelet winner Phil Ivey and Annette Obrestad (Captain for Team Europe) picking 2008 WSOP Main Event Winner Peter Eastgate. The event will see the best of the Americas take on the best of Europe with one place still to be decided online at Betfair Poker.

This year’s WSOPE will see four events, with the Caesars Cup invitational being held on the 25th September.

Over the coming weeks more team members will be announced with one place still up for grabs on Betfair Poker for the European Team.

Annette Obrestad commented “The line up for this year’s WSOPE Caesars Cup is already starting to look impressive and looks like being a who’s who of poker. The fact that a member of the public can qualify to sit alongside some of the best players in the game will be a massive attraction to players on Betfair Poker. I look forward to captaining our team to glory on September 25th this year in London”
