The Holland Casino in Amsterdam hosted the 17th edition of the Master Classics of Poker, one of the most prestigious poker tournaments of the year, which featured six ranking events between the 7th and the 15th of November 2008.
The first event, held on Friday 7th of November, was the 1,000+50 No-Limit Holdem tournament which included 1 rebuy or add-on. 306 players battled it out for the 518,000 prizepool, but it was Michael Tureniec from Sweden that managed to win the 158,720 first prize after beating Stojan van Zadelhoff heads up.
The 3-day Pot-Limit Omaha tournament started on Saturday 8th of November. The 1,000+50 buy-in attracted 184 poker players and offered a decent 316,000 prizepool. It was Englands Surinder Sunar that grabbed the 1st place prize of 105,400. He also managed to finish in 26th place in the Lido International Dutch Open, pocketing himself an extra 10,050 in prize money.
The Main Event of the Master Classics, The Lido International Dutch Open 4-day event, commenced at 3pm on Tuesday 11th of November. The 6,000+200 No-Limit Hold'em Freezeout enticed 335 eager poker players to pit their skills against each other to claim their piece of the 2,010,000 prizepool. Eventually, it was Jan Sorensen from Norway who beat his heads up opponent Gustav Ekerot from Sweden and took home the 623,100 prize, leaving Ekerot with the second place prize of 357,780.
Another 3-day No-Limit Hold'em Freezeout began on Thursday 13th of November, this time it was a 2,500+100 buy in. The 545,000 prizepool appealed to 211 players. After 3 days of play, C Chang and Yves Molin, both from Holland, beat their final table opponents and made it to the heads up stage of the competition. Chang finally defeated Molin, earning himself 174,900 therefore leaving Molin with the second place prize of 96,990.
The 500+50 No-Limit Holdem Freezeout was held on Friday 14th of November and seemed to be the most popular side event attracting 314 runners. The 2-day event had a 160,000 prizepool up for grabs and paid 9 places. The finalists, all from Holland, continued play until E Vermoen and M Verhaegen reached the heads up stage which then resulted in Vermoen winning the tournament and receiving the 48,670 first place prize.
The Master Classics of Poker week ended with a Speed Event which was held on Saturday 15th of November. The 300+30 No-Limit Holdem Freezeout offered a total of 69,037 in prize money and tempted 223 players. The 22,077 first prize was awarded to Christian Asche after he rose to victory following a heads up battle with S Kip.
