The Main Event of European Poker Tour’s stop in Spain began at the Gran Casino de Barcelona. The great and the good from the poker world and a smattering of online qualifiers are vying to capture the title that German poker star Sebastian Ruthenberg won last time around. The Main Event is an €8000+300 buy-in NLH tournament.
With two starting days scheduled the Day 1a chip leader is Diego Arias Rodriguez who qualified in a special $800 satellite on PokerStars run for Spanish players. Below are selected chip counts at the end of Day 1a.

As EPT Barcelona Day 1b commences there are a total of 270 players registered to play. Among them is tennis legend and Pokerstars player Boris Becker and also Fatima Moreira De Melo, a Dutch Olympic gold medallist field hockey player. Below are a selecition of players who will take part in today’s action including former champ Brandon Schaefer and Julian Thew.
On a side note, Daniel Negreanu is justifiably irritated because as he was on his way to the tournament and taking photos with fans, someone picked his pocket and stole his wallet. Negreanu lost all his cash, credit cards, and driver’s license.
